An Intro to My Project and I

Hello friends! So my name is Jordan and I am from Horicon Wisconsin (a small city about an hour south of Appleton). I am a senior at Lawrence University and I am a psychology major with an education studies minor and am excited to graduate! Above is a picture of a wall tapestry that I bought from Amazon (for $8!) freshman year and has been with me through all of college. Next year, I will be getting a Master's in Counseling with an emphasis on clinical mental health counseling with children and adolescents. I currently work at a place in Appleton called Caravel Autism Health where I do therapy with kids with Autism. Even though I am excited for what the future brings (and excited to finally leave Lawrence), COVID has given me a lot of time to reflect on my college experience so far.

Fun facts about me: I love mac and cheese spirals, I have been a Kwik Trip employee for over 3 years, I have been skydiving before, and I have a dog named Ripley

I recently completed my senior capstone project on the efficacy of mindfulness interventions. Mindfulness is a therapeutic practice that can be defined as paying thoughtful attention to your present feelings, attitudes, and experiences. Specifically, when someone is practicing mindfulness, they must be kind to themselves and practice acceptance. I think that for me this blog will serve as my own form of personal mindfulness practice as I work to be kind to myself and pay special attention to my surroundings and emotions. During the isolation and intensely fearful period of the COVID-19 pandemic, I think that a lot of us (myself included) lost sight of the things that make us happy.

As an artist, I hope to present the beauty in small, seemingly meaningless things. To do this I plan to show what I see and how I see it. I plan to use the captions to emphasize what I am seeing and feeling within that moment. Though I do not plan to hide when I have bad days, I will plan to use social media to reflect on my feelings, paying special attention when it is positive. With this in mind... I welcome you to check out my "Happiness Log" as I document this journey.

If this doesn't work let me know

Response to Jurgenson, Chapter 1: Documentary Vision, page 1-24

As far a the reading goes... which was very interesting and sparked conversation between my roommate and I (who is also taking this class: hello Soph).... I think that the quote "Images... transmit alertness to experience rather than facts" in reference to social media images is going to be true for my own posts. It is actually exactly what I plan to do. I plan to bring my own alertness to my experience by taking quick snapshot images of what is sparking my interest. Though, these photos may not be "high tech", that is no to say that there is not a lot of thought going into them, as I am trying to convey my own emotions through a screen. I also appreciate the notion that Jurgenson brings up... that no camera is a neutral window in which to see the world. Not only is the camera that is being used able to change the way that the real world is perceived, but the individual who is taking the picture can also make their own edits. I think that this can be both helpful and hindering. Helpful in that artists can enhance what they are seeing but harmful in that they may lose sight in reality. I have much to say about this but it is getting late and I am tired so perhaps I will make another post later to talk about this!

I think Kristen does a great job capturing her thoughts and special moments

An interesting way to capture a moment
